Incoming Students

We are excited to welcome you to the Department of Anthropology at UBC! Wherever you are in the world, we hope that you are now making plans for the upcoming academic year.

Please browse this section of our website to help orient you to the Department, the University and life in Vancouver. Be sure to mark the dates of the orientation sessions offered by the Department as well as by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. You can access information on those sessions through the link on the left. During the Department orientation sessions, we will go over what you will need to know in your first year as an anthropology graduate student. We highly recommend that you attend – lunch will be provided and there will be ample opportunities to have your questions answered.

You should now have been assigned a temporary or permanent supervisor. Your supervisor will be available to meet with you in the first few weeks of term and throughout the first year, to give you advice on setting up a program of study (such as choosing courses, planning for the thesis, and so on), and on finding a permanent supervisor (if you do not already have one) and Supervisory Committee. Please remember that many faculty and students will not be on campus until the first week of September, so if you are unable to meet with your supervisor before the start of term, please make arrangements to meet soon after classes start.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Anthropology Graduate Program Assistant for help.

Please visit the Welcome to UBC web page as well as the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (FoGS) web section for New Grad Students.
