The analysis of ancient biomolecules – from C14 dating in col lagen to the extraction of ancient DNA for determining ancestral relationsh ips – has become an indispensable tool in archaeology for understanding pas t societies. Among the newest advancements in this field is the sequencing and characterization of ancient proteins\, which now complement established methods like DNA\, lipid\, and stable isotope analysis. The study of ancie nt proteins is rapidly advancing and offers unique insights into various as pects of the past\, including diet\, environments\, human-animal interactio ns\, and more. In this presentation\, I will present two methods of ancient protein analysis: Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS) and shotgun palaeoproteomics. Each method has been used to address a range of research questions in archaeology. I will present examples of their application and discuss both their strengths and limitations.
Lindsey Paskulin is a PhD candidate in the Department of Anthropology and the laboratory technici an for the Laboratory of Archaeology. She is a member of ADaPT Laboratory F acilties\, a center for biomolecular archaeology at UBC led by Professor Ca milla Speller. Her research focuses on tthe contribution of biomolecular me thods to address questions of diet\, foodways\, an d cuisine in the past.
