“The Laboratory of Speculative Ethnology Anthropology + Design = Experiments in Participant Making”
Speaker: Dr. Elizabeth Chin
Abstract:
The Laboratory of Speculative Ethnology is a real/fake entity through which I play with bringing the ethnographic immersion of anthropology together with the material and making energies of design. Inspired by Afro and Indigenous futurisms I explore technology, performance and research modalities. I will discuss a number of projects and experiments including AfroGoPros, Wakanda University, and my ongoing applied work in rural Haiti. I use this platform as a way to challenge anthropology to be more rigorously speculative and pushing design to move away from problem solving to question-finding. What does it mean to materialize ethnography as installation? How can design deeply engage crucial questions related to power inequality and justice? Occasionally, I also try to have fun as well.
