This course examines how an anthropological perspective on politics gives us insight into the nature of power and social transformation across multiple geographic contexts. Through ethnographies and multimedia we will gain a deeper understanding of how institutions of political power and governance shape human agency, community, and identity, and vice versa. In doing so, we will aim to unsettle a fixed and universal definition of politics; rather we aim to see how political systems and approaches change over time and space and transform culture itself. Through engaging with topics such as migration, social movements, policing, and humanitarianism, we will also look at how different moral and ethical projects become sites of political dissidence and reimagination.
