Abstract:
Indigenous university students across Turtle Island who learn or relearn about the impacts of residential schools’ encounter both unexpected and expected vulnerabilities about past family traumas. Indigenous students also confront the intergenerational consequences of settler colonialism. As students process their feelings and emotions about these colonial institutions, it requires a process called colliding heartwork to aid in the emotional work to heal. This presentation highlights the strength and resiliency of Indigenous university students’ perspectives on how they experience these institutions using photovoice. It blends Indigenous students’ heartwork from two universities situated in Canada and the United States.
