Examining the private ESL industry in South Korea, specifically focused on the position of foreign teachers within it, how the English language is portrayed through marketing, and how the industry may be changing. This examination is especially looking at the forces that shaped the industry’s current shape and those that may be bringing change to it in the future, or not. This involves an examination of globalization and Americanization within South Korea, as well as movements that are gaining force around the world and within the country, such as the notion of World Englishes and current movements against test-focused education.
