Anthropology of Media: Now offered in-person or in a live virtual course

Anthropology of media (ANTH 378) is a sub-field of sociocultural anthropology that explores cultural aspects of media production and consumption.

This summer, this course will be offered in a concurrent hybrid format for 2021 Summer Term 2.

We’ve created a quick FAQ to answer your questions about this new course delivery format.

Q: What does it mean that the course is offered in a concurrent hybrid format?

A: It means that students enrol in either the remote (ANTH378-002) or on-campus (ANTH378-022) section of the course. The on-campus class (a maximum of 19 students and the instructor) meets in person in a large classroom (Buchanan A202) while respecting social distancing and COVID rules. The lectures will be captured live and simultaneously broadcast online to remote students in the virtual classroom.

Q: Does it mean that both sections (ANTH378-002 and ANTH378-022) meet at the same time and are taught by the same instructor?

A: Yes! The current course schedule website does not have a marker for hybrid classes. Therefore, we had to create two different sections, one for the remote and one for the in-person segment. Students enrolled in the two sections attend the same class at the same time, whether remotely or face-to-face.

Q: Who should register for the on-campus segment of the course?

A: If you will be living in Vancouver this summer and need a break from your online classes, or if you are a person who learns better in-person, you’d benefit from attending the on-campus class.

Q: What if I register for the on-campus class, but I feel sick one day or I need to isolate? Can I still attend the class remotely?

A: Absolutely!

Q: Why is there only a limited number of seats available in the on-campus section?

A: Given the COVID safety regulations and social distancing restrictions, the largest classroom in the Faculty of Arts equipped with live lecture-capturing devices (Buchanan A202) can accommodate only up to 19 students.

Q: What if I have any other questions about the course? Whom should I contact?

A: Please feel free to contact the course instructor (amir.shiva@ubc.ca).
