Anthropology PhD student Younus Mushtaq Ahmed has recently co-authored an OpEd in the Times of India (Chennai edition) about protecting the rights of sanitation workers.

He and his co-author Dr. Priti Narayan (UBC Geography) highlight the hazardous and stigmatized labour faced by the predominantly marginalized sanitation workforce.

“The health of sanitation workers must be regularly monitored with comprehensive preventative care provided. Many workers say they self-medicate with painkillers or alcohol to cope with unsanitary conditions.”
