Dear Jellyfish, I’m Sorry for the War We Waged

PhD student Felix Giroux was recently published in Atmos.earth. Atmos is a nonprofit media organization focused on the cross-pollination of climate and culture, delivering award-winning journalism and creative storytelling through a biannual print magazine and daily digital features.

His essay, Dear Jellyfish, I’m Sorry for the War We Waged is a creative exploration about what a militarized war on jellyfish says about our disregard for the queer and the marginalized.

“We hunt and kill the jellyfish because we’ve designed a world deemed incompatible with them. As we’ve emptied, warmed, and polluted the oceans, we’ve paved a smooth path for their kind to thrive.”

“I’m sorry for the mixed signals, jellyfish. We say they are dangerous, but the reality is that they’re mostly dangerous to capital—to nuclear power plants, farms, commercial fishing, and tourism. That’s why people pour resources into their elimination.”
