Jay Hilsden receives 2024 Peter Wall Legacy Award

Congratulations to Anthropology MA student Jay Hilsden on receiving a Wall Research Award!

Jay’s research focuses on documenting the diversity of flatfish, such as halibut, flounders, and soles, in British Columbia’s archaeological record. Flatfish bones are important for understanding species’ ranges, abundances, and the diets of past peoples, but identifying these species through skeletal remains can be challenging. This research will help determine the types of Pacific flatfish that were caught and consumed by Indigenous peoples in the region. Ultimately, Jay’s work will contribute to reconstructing the marine ecosystems of BC before the impacts of colonialism and commercial fishing.
