Winter term I, September-December 2022

Wednesdays 2-5

In person format, Choi 120

Instructor: Prof. Hugh Gusterson (hugh.gusterson@ubc.ca)

This class examines various features of neoliberalism: the financialization of the economy; the rise of data surveillance capitalism; the branding of the self; widening inequality and the growth of urban slums; the securitization of public space; the rise of assessment culture at universities and in development projects; the use of debt as a disciplining tool; and the propagation of libertarian ideology. The readings are eclectic, mixing historical, ethnographic, journalistic and cultural studies approaches.
