Steve Daniel Inducted into CFL Hall of Fame

Join us in congratulating Anthropology PhD student, Steve Daniel on his induction into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame at the 2024 Grey Cup in Vancouver this month.

Daniel becomes the only pro sports analyst/statistician inducted into any Hall of Fame, NHL, CFL, Major League Baseball, NFL or otherwise. This is a significant recognition of his many years work in the league, including his current position as associate vice president of football analytics.

While football and anthropology may seem world’s apart, Daniel received the honour for contributions to developing new ways and breakthroughs for creating access to historical data, historical narratives and current statistical analyses In real time, re-writing the language of football. In short, very similar to the kinds of work and research he has been exploring with the Musqueam community since 2007.

“My archaeological work and 30-year career in professional sports have had so many of these parallels in terms of techniques and learning. Many wonderful Indigenous partner communities over the past 18 years to work with based on these same fundamental principles of OCAP: Ownership, Control, Access and Possession.”
